Body Image

These images are from a project based on Body Image. This project examined the way in which beauty and body form are represented in modern art and our media, and challenged the typical conventions. My inspiration for this work came from a wide range of sources, but in particular Pablo Picasso and Jenny Saville. Picasso went against the conventions of typical art. Rather than painting a beautiful version of the reality he saw before him as was common place for portraiture in his time, he instead painted exactly what he saw. I also found the work of Jenny Saville really interesting, as her style completely attacks stereotypical representation. She shows what would commonly be considered grotesque body types in her work. This inspired me to go against the conventions of modern photography, and rather than lighting a model, photographing them and then developing the image to make them adhere to the typical image of beauty, I merely scanned the body with an everyday printer scanner. Using this medium allowed me to capture the harsh reality of the body, detailing every stray piece of body hair and every imperfection.

Perfume Advertising

This piece was for a Media project on the representation of women in perfume adverts. This project involved a research essay, followed by advertisements reflecting the conventions I have found. This advert demonstrates the way women are often represented as sexual objects, subject to gaze, by using sexual iconography and using sexually connotative words.

V for Vendetta

This work is for a Graphic Design project on V for Vendetta. The brief was to create a poster for the film

This image shows a selection of my scamps. They all contain relevant imagery from the film and are informed from my research. I like to use a variety of media when drawing up scamps, as it helps me to begin deciding which media work with.

This image shows a selection of media experimentation. I think choosing the media that suits the image is a key factor in design, and this allows me to make an educated choice.

From my media experimentation, it was clear that watercolour was the media that would fit with how I wanted my poster to look. V for Vendetta is based on a comic book, and I felt that this imagery and media fits with the tone of the comic book's art, despite being slightly more modern. I felt it was important to consider the origin of my film within my work, and wanted my poster to contain elements from both the comic book and the film. I thought that the watercolour worked well for each background, and so decided to continue to develop these images digitally.

This is my final design. I think that the final development on photoshop has really improved it, and feel it is informed by my research and reflective of the film.

Sexuality

This photograph was for a Photography project on Sexuality. My main inspiration in this project was the work of Robert Mapplethorpe. This image was taken on a digital camera, and then developed with Adobe Photoshop. I edited it to look more like it was taken on film, as I felt this style suited the image more.

Menu Design

This work was for a Graphic Design brief to design a menu for a restaurant. The restaurant I designed for was Mexican. After researching Mexican culture and determining significant public interest in it's Aztec and Mayan routes, I decided to produce work with that theme.

This shows my original idea pre-development. This simple drawing shows an Aztec symbol for their sun god, and is iconic to their culture thanks to it's significance to the Aztec and Mayan calenders, prominent in popular culture thanks to the concept of 2012. The media used was soft pastel, as I wanted to use something with it's own texture. I had the intention of developing this to look somewhat like a stone wall carving or something similar, and felt it would be easier with an existing texture to work with.
This is my previous drawing after digital development. I altered the colour and texture to give a more bronzed and damaged effect to fit with the with the theme. I then went on to apply the logo of the restaurant's name.

For the restaurant's menu cover I decided to tile my design. This increases the sense of a carving in an Aztec temple wall.

This image shows the front cover of the menu, which continues to tile round to the back cover.

Public Health Campaign

This piece is an advertisement warning the public about the dangers of sunbeds. The texture in the background is a closeup photograph of skin, and the blue highlight on the text is meant to resemble the blue of sunbed uv rays. The text in this advertisement makes use of subtle shock with it's direct tone, which has appeared to be a useful technique for this type of advertisement in my research.

Consumerism

These two images were produced for a project about Consumerism. I researched the way our society lives, and the way in which money and credit are regarded as sustenance today, rather than food and water. People no longer regard food as what is needed to survive, and instead feel that their lives revolve around money. The first image was development of my concept and idea, which I then expanded upon to produce my final piece. I feel my images, especially the second, illustrate and dramatise the extent to which people rely on money, and the negative effect such consumerism has.
